Candis Gabriella King Obituary

“Queen” Candis Gabriella King was born September 20, 2010 in Fairfax, Virginia to Joshua and Candi King. From the moment she was born, she was known as her parents' “perfect” baby and was a leader in her family. Although she was not the eldest, she was always “managing” her siblings, Josclyn and Joshua II aka Jr., and sometimes even her parents.

Candis was a bright light for everyone around her. She embodied a kind and loving spirit and was full of fun, wit and humor. Candis was an artist of many forms and expressed herself through singing, dancing, painting, photography and crocheting. She was an avid reader and writer and loved to travel. She had many interests, including a special love for Transformers, anime and cosplay. Some of her favorite things to do included blogging, visiting Korean spas and attending anime conventions, specifically BLERDCon with her dad and GalaxyCON with her friends.

Candis was an early reader and gifted student who excelled academically throughout her time in Prince William County Public Schools. She was always challenging herself and even spent her last summer taking advanced courses. During her time at Swans Creek Elementary School, she loved choir and Girl Scouts and shared a special bond with Ms. Moore, Mrs. Forbes and Ms. Whitney. While attending Potomac Shores Middle School, she served on the Student Council Association and was a leader of the Kiwanis Club, where she was a keynote speaker for the Kiwanis Regional Conference. Candis went on to participate in the All-County Choir, Junior Honor Society, Otaku Club and Dance Mentoring Club. Candis was a sophomore at Charles J. Colgan High School, where she auditioned and was selected for the renowned Center for Performing Arts Choir. She was a proud member of the Pride of Colgan Color Guard and recently joined the Yearbook Club. At Colgan, Candis was known for her giving heart, often bringing extra clothes for other students who didn’t have enough.

Candis was deeply involved in her community. She was a member of the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium, Delta Academy, Delta GEMS, Citrus Frenzy dance group and the Crochet Club. Never shy about her opinion, she spent countless hours volunteering for candidates and causes she believed in.

An entrepreneur at a young age, Candis was co-CEO of Speedy JC’s, where she partnered with her brother Joshua II in baking and selling delicious and uniquely flavored cinnamon rolls. She also recently began training with local businesses, Gloss Nails and Caring Loft to become a nail technician and beauty shop owner. Candis loved to cook and bake. She spent countless hours in the kitchen creating new recipes and replicating Korean cooking videos. At the age of nine, she wrote a book entitled “Cooking In My Kitchen,” which detailed her favorite vegetarian recipes. Candis’ dream in life was to attend Norfolk State University to study political science and go on to obtain a doctorate in anthropology.

“Queen” Candis will forever be known as a courageous fighter, loving daughter, sister, cousin, and friend. She passed away peacefully in her father’s arms following a courageous battle with sickle cell disease.

Candis leaves to cherish her memory, parents Joshua and Candi King of Dumfries, VA; sister Josclyn King; brother Joshua King II; special big sisters Janiah, Aura, Rocio, Evangelia, Julianna, Salome; grandparents; a great-grandmother; aunts; uncles; cousins; and a host of special family and friends.
